The Potsdam-Berlin region is a focal point of internationally competitive Earth Science and Political and Administrative Science research and education. In both disciplines, a number of widely recognized cooperations and joint research projects stand witness to the close interaction between universities and non-university research institutes, including the University of Potsdam (UP) and the Freie Universität Berlin (FUB) as well as at the Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum (GFZ) and the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar Research (AWI); (ii) a unique concentration of Earth observation capabilities (e.g., satellites, plate-boundary observatories); and (iii) world-renowned climate and climate-impact research groups at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and the recently founded Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS).

This concentration of expertise is unmatched in Europe, and has created a fertile ground for collaborative, cutting-edge research and for disseminating information. Both disciplines have subsequently emerged as essential contributors to the discourse on the direction of environmental and social development, particularly in the context of global climate change, natural hazards, and the progressive depletion of natural resources. Utilizing this unique setting to inspire further strategically oriented development and growth is the primary goal of UP and is imperative for the university’s future.

Based on our expertise within the IPCC, GTZ and CTBTO (among others) and long-time experience in training governmental and non-governmental boards (particularly in cooperation with ENA, InWent, GTZ), we will join the Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) on climate research, organized by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), with the aim of focusing research efforts on climate-impact mitigation and adaptation technologies, in close cooperation with leading partners from industry. This entails innovative approaches to the visualization and communication of data, as well as to the assessment of uncertainties.
