Jun 2014, Potsdam: Potsdam Sommer School "Arctic Geogovernance"

Die Partner des Potsdamer Forschungs- und Technologieverbund zu Naturgefahren, Klimawandel und Nachhaltigkeit (PROGRESS) tragen gemeinsam mit dem Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) und der Stadt Potsdam erstmals eine Summer School für Nachwuchswissenschaftler im Themenbereich Nachhaltigkeit und Geogovernance aus. Unter dem Titel “Arctic in the Anthropocene” werden vom 23. Juni bis 4. Juli 2014 Nachwuchswissenschaftler aus der ganzen Welt zusammen mit Experten, Politikern und Interessenvertretern verschiedener nationaler und internationaler Institutionen die Problematik der rapiden Veränderungen des  Ökosystems der Arktis diskutieren und sich mit den globalen Herausforderungen und dringenden Fragen auseinandersetzten. PROGRESS und seine Partner möchten mit dieser Summer School die eigene Expertise bekannt machen und zusätzlichen Input für die eigenen Forschung gewinnen. Die Summer School soll ab 2014 jährlich zu wechselnden Themen stattfinden. Am 30.6. gibt es an der Universität Potsdam eine öffentliche Diskussionsrunde mit Vertretern der Wirtschaft, des Seerechts und der Klimapolitik.

Feb 2014, Potsdam: Keep Cool - MPM students simulate climate negotiations with Falko Ueckerdt (PIK)

As a preparation for the forthcoming Study Tour to Bonn and Brussels in March, the MPM students spent a day dealing with the topic of climate change on Monday, February 10, 2014. Falko Ueckerdt of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) introduced them to the main physical and political surrounding global warming and climate protection.

Applying these insights practically the students engaged in vivid discussions and negotiations when playing "Keep Cool" - a strategy game simulating climate change negotiations. Participants represent different countries who try to realize their economic and political goals whilst tackling climate change cooperatively.

Nov 2013, Potsdam. Climate Breakfast with Prof. Vaclav Smil (University of Manitoba) and Dr. Florian Zickfeld (DESERTEC)

In cooperation with the American Academy in Berlin and the graduate school WIPCAD at the University of Potsdam the PCPM invited Prof. Vaclav Smil, Distinguished Professor Emeritus der University of Manitoba, Canada to talk at the seventh Climate Breakfast on November 13, 2013. Vividly sharing his insights on the topic of “China and the Potential for a Low-Carbon Future?” Prof. Smil invited the MPM and WIPCAD students to think about China’s energy policy and its implications for international climate policies. The regular Climate Breakfast events are organized for the GeoGovernance stream of the postgraduate Master of Public Management (MPM) Program within the framework of PROGRESS.


At the occasion of the eighth Climate Breakfast on November 28, 2013, Dr. Florian Zickfeld, Director Strategy, DII – DESERTEC Industrial Initiative, talked about the „The DESERTEC Strategy“.

During her professional career Susanne Weber-Mosdorf held several positions in industry as well as regional and federal government where she worked on topics ranging from Environment and Transport to Finances, Social Affairs and Culture. From 2003-2006 she was Director-General of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Securtiy in Berlin. Ms. Weber-Mosdorf assumed her role as Executive Director of the WHPO Office at the European Union in 2008.

This event is organized for the GeoGovernance stream of postgraduate Master of Public Management (MPM) Program within the framework of PROGRESS.

Nov 2012, Potsdam: PCPM organized Climate Breakfast with Stefan Barthelmes (Ernst & Young)

Within the PROGRESS study-program initiative Master of Public Management (MPM), PCPM invited Stefan Barthelmens, Senior Manager at the Division for Climate Change and Sustainability Services at Ernst & Young. Mr. Barthelmens spoke on the topic of "Environmental, Social, and Governance Reporting of Private Companies" at our 4th PCPM/PROGRESS Climate Breakfast on November 21, 2012.

The "Climate Breakfast" is organized within the joint framework of PROGRESS and the MPM-GeoGovernance course "Global Environmental Policy" taught by Prof. Detlef Sprinz, Ph.D. (University of Potsdam / Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research - PIK).
